Lime putty/wash

To create our putties and limewash the finest Buxton quicklime is slaked and matured for a minimum of 1 month. We only use fine powdered (as opposed to granulated) quicklime which greatly reduces the possibility of any unslaked particles.

Lime Putty

Matured lime putty pure white in colour. Lime putty is mixed with well graded sharp sand to create mortars and plasters for use mainly on historic buildings, soft masonry and where exact mortar matches are important. Lime putty is used without the addition of water. The putty fills the voids between particles of sand when mixed, therefore as a rough guide 1 volume of putty mixed with 3 volumes of sand produces 3 volumes of mortar/plaster.

Limewash
A pure white limewash using our lime putty. The traditional wall finish internally and externally onto lime plasters and renders for most old buildings. It is much thinner than modern paints, as such new lime plaster render will require at least four coats. 1 ltr of limewash will cover approximately 3-6sqm.

Other colours are available please phone for details.

Premixed Mortars and Plasters

Our premixed mortars and plasters are ‘wet’ mixes using our matured lime putty. They are made using a traditional pan mixer which produces a well compacted fatty mortar. Easy to use straight from the tub and for larger projects we supply 500kg – 1tonne bags. A dried sample biscuit can also be purchased in order to see the finished appearance. We hold stock of our standard mixes in tubs but it is advisable to check availability of bags.

Course 3:1 mix
Our course mix is made using a blend of Frome and Wareham sands. Ideal for backing coats of internal plasters or exterior render. The limestone dark grit makes it ideal for flint work as the combination maintains the white mortar colour with flecks of dark particles.

lime mortar
Medium 3:1 mix
Ideal for second coats of internal plasters. It can also be used for the final coat if a more textured look is required. Excellent as an exterior render or as a mortar for thin joints. It is our most popular premixed mortar using Wareham sand. Whitish in colour, the mortar matches many of the traditional buildings within Wiltshire/Hampshire and the surrounding counties.

Superfine 2:1 mix
A lime plaster made with a rich 2:1 mix of fine sand and lime putty. Mixed using a superfine sand it has a smooth texture and it is ideal for the top 3-5mm finishing coat on internal plaster.

Special Blends
We have a range of special blends which are made to order. However, dried samples are available to check colour matches before ordering. We are also able to produce a blend specific to your particular situation - please call to discuss your requirements.

Medium 3:1 mix code BL2

It has a similar grading of sands to our BL1 but has a subtle golden colour to the mortar.

Course 3:1 mix code BL6

A mellow yellow colour this mortar is excellent for brickwork and pointing where a more textured material is required as it has large particles up to 5mm.[click image to view larger image]

Any mix can be made to order with the addition of an animal hair. Haired plaster is used on some external backing coats and on the backing coats internally to laths. Hair dissolves in the plaster over time therefore it should not be stored more than two months. The plaster is still useable after this time but would require the addition of more hair.

Other mixes are available.

Natural Hydraulic Limes

Natural hydraulic limes contain silica and trace elements. It is these elements that when burnt, become reactive with water and will cause an initial hydraulic set of the mortar when mixed with water. This initial hydraulic set makes the Hydraulic Lime mortars easier to use for contract work and for conservation work where time scales and ease of use are important. The work still needs protection from wind, rain, frost and drying, but for much shorter periods of time than with lime putty mortars. Natural hydraulic limes are categorized depending on the content of silica and trace elements which effects the speed of setting and final compressive strength.

Castle NHL 2

A feebly hydraulic lime. Used for internal plastering and externally where masonry is made of a soft or friable material.

Castle NHL 3.5

A moderately hydraulic lime. The most popular and used for most applications. Suitable for masonry and external plaster works and for new build work.

Castle NHL5

An eminently hydraulic lime. This material is used in marine environments where a quick set is beneficial and in areas of high exposure to moisture, such as wall copings, chimneys. Also used to create a limecrete floor.

Castle NHL 2  Castle NHL 3.5  Castle NHL5

Castle natural hydraulic limes are made from limestone from the socli quarries. Pure white, they are excellent for colour matching.

Singleton Birch Natural Hydraulic Lime is produced in England using Lincolnshire chalk. They have a slight cream colour which is seen in the mortar colour. They are slightly weaker compared to most other types and have a cream colour which makes the NHL 2 the ideal choice for work to chalk cob buildings in our area. Their NH5z is a blend of their NHL3.5 with GGBS to enable it to conform to standard EN459

Building Materials

Pozzolan

Pozzolans improve the strength and decrease the setting times for lime based products. GGBS is a cost effective, British sourced pozzolan. It is usually added at 5% 7.5% or 10% by volume depending on the circumstances.

Chalk Bricks

Used for the repair of chalk cob walls. Our handmade bricks are made using crushed local chalk mixed with a proportion of hay/straw to add strength, compressed then left to air dry. These bricks are excellent for repair work where shrinkage can be kept to a minimum. Chalk brick measurements are (24x10.5x7cm)  therefore an area of 1m2 will require 50. Orders are usually made on demand allowing 3 weeks for delivery; however a small stock is held on site. Please phone for availability and lead times.

Laths

All our laths are English sourced and hand riven. Chestnut is the more traditional material however Scotts pine is being increasingly used. Riven laths are stronger and give lime plasters a better key than sawn laths.  They are sold in 3ft, 3ft6 and 4ft lengths in bundles of 50.

We also stock softwood sawn laths in 4ft or 8ft lengths. These are a cost effective alternative for walls but are not recommended for ceilings. Please phone for availability and delivery charges.

Natcem 35

A rapid setting high strength mortar made with a natural cement and aggregate no greater than 2mm. Used for repairs to cement based materials, holding down bolts and fine moulding amongst other uses.[click image to view larger image]

Animal hair

Teased into plaster and render mixes the addition of hair gives extra tensile strength to the mix.

Horse hair:  Corse dark hair for use in the backing coats internally and externally. A bundle of approximately 100g will be required for an area of 8sqm of lath or 10-12sqm of solid wall.

Yak hair:     Used in the same way as horse hair but is not as straight and has a slightly softer feel.

Goat hair:   A fine white hair used in the finish coat to internal walls and ceilings.

Aggregates

Wareham washed sand.
A well graded sharp sand for mixing with lime to produce plasters and mortars. It produces a whitish plaster/mortar.

Frome washed grit sand.
Must be mixed with a finer sand such as Wareham to create a well graded course sand suitable for backing coats or in mortar for pointing. It originates from limestone and has dark colour particles.

Playpit sand
A very fine sand that when mixed with a high proportion of lime creates a plaster for the final finish coat internally.

Our sands are available in 25kg bags or large 900kg bags to order.

LECA for limecrete floors

Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate (LECA) is used to construct a limecrete floor. The coated 10-20mm is used loose as an insulating layer. The coating reduces the capillary action. Above that, the limecrete slab is made using a range of particle sizes mixed with commonly NHL5 which produces a breathable floor particularly suitable old buildings. Please call for more information on Limecrete floors.[click image to view larger image]

Brushes

Churn brush

The traditional way to finish most brickwork, stonework and pointing was by using a churn brush. Once the mortar is fairly stiff the wall is beaten with a churn brush, leaving a flush finish with an open texture. This aids moisture evaporation and gives a pleasing finish to the mortar revealing the range of particles within the sands etc used. Available with long or short handles.[click image to view larger image]
